If you suspect your cat has a liver problem, do not hesitate to have it seen by your veterinarian. Liver disease is debilitating and often requires hospitalization during treatment.
The liver is the largest internal organ of the body and is responsible for a number of metabolic functional and detoxification processes. Liver disease occurs when the liver becomes damaged, but a unique characteristic of the liver is that it is the only organ in the cat’s body that is capable of rejuvenating itself.

There are several causes of liver disease in cats. They include hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver
disease, cholangiohepatitis, which involves the gallbladder, pancreatitis, toxoplasmosis,
this can affect pregnant women, a portosystemic shunt, and cancer. If you suspect that your
cat may have liver disease, signs to look for include decreased appetite, weight loss, bad breath, jaundice or yellowing of the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, weakness and lethargy, ascites, which is fluid in the abdomen, vomiting and diarrhea, and possibly seizures.
