Carnivore Feeding Habits | Biologically Appropriate Diets

Would you like to help your dog or cat live a longer and healthier life? The best thing you can do to promote longevity is to ensure that your dog or cat is eating a biologically appropriate diet based on the principles of optimum nutrition. So, let’s talk about foods and supplements dogs and cats need to maximize their health.

The most important thing to know is that both cats and dogs have virtually identical digestive
systems to their wild cousins, the lions and tigers, wolves, and wild dogs. Wild dogs and wolves hunt in packs, they eat a diet that is almost entirely meat from their prey. On very rare occasions, a wild dog or wolf may eat a few berries or nibble on a plant, but this is far less than 1% of their total diet. Wild cats like lions and tigers are all solitary hunters of animal flesh, and so is the domestic cat that is allowed to roam outside. By examining the digestive anatomy and physiology of dogs and cats and observing their feeding trends, one can only conclude they are true obligate carnivores, showing no tendency toward any omnivorous – that’s carbohydrate feeding behavior.

So why do most of the commercial food products on the shelves today contain large amounts
of grain-based carbohydrates like corn, rice, and wheat when the digestive systems of dogs
and cats do not process these materials in a healthy way? In fact, we know that this practice has led to many disease conditions that affect the major organ systems of the dog and cat. You wouldn’t feed your children a diet of donuts and candy, so why would you feed your pets empty carbohydrates that we know are not good for them. The answer is simply maximum profit. Corn and wheat cost far less than meat – this practice defies both logic and nutritional science.

Next time you have a chance, put an ear of corn alongside a piece of meat and see which one your pet naturally selects. If you want your dog or cat to live a long and healthy life, feed them what their bodies are designed for – high-quality, meat-based protein, and almost zero plant-based ingredients.
