French Bulldog History

All the way back in the industrial revolution, lacemakers from England emigrated to Northern France and brought small breeds of English Bulldogs with them. Here, it’s hypothesized that these bulldogs were bred with pugs and terriers to ultimately create the French Bulldog breed. After becoming widely popular throughout France, this breed was brought over to North America by the late 1800’s. Since then, French Bulldogs have grown to become one of the most popular breeds in America.

Temperament

When French Bulldogs aren’t clowning around and playing with their human companions, this breed is affectionate and easy-going. Given how they’re not very vocal dogs and aren’t known to yap, Frenchie’s love to lay out on your lap and receive pets. They don’t require as much exercise as other small dogs and a short daily walk should meet their energy quota. Appearance

Frenchie’s have loose soft skin that forms wrinkles around their head and shoulders as they age. They have a fine coat of short smooth hair that can come in assorted colors which include brown, white, black, blue, or a variety of other hues. While they fortunately don’t shed much, it’s important to regularly clean in-between their skin folds with a cloth to avoid skin infections.

Health Concerns

Particularly with French Bulldogs, more so than other breeds, it’s important to adopt your dog from a reputable breeder. Frenchie’s typically are affected with certain health conditions that run in this breed more frequently than other dogs. Most importantly, this flat-faced breed is prone to Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) which makes it difficult for them to pant and cool themselves down. They’re also more prone to develop spine and neck issues as a result from how they’re bred to be short. Frenchie’s also have distinctive ‘bat ears’ which commonly gain infections due to their narrow and wide ear canals. Finally, French Bulldogs are also prone to skin allergies, some of which require veterinary intervention to alleviate.
